The Congress of Religions Wednesday said that it disassociates with the statements made by some members of the organisation at a press conference held Tuesday regarding the removal of ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The Congress of Religions in its statement issued Wednesday said that especially Hindu and Christian leaders in the organisation are of opinion that that the ban on LTTE should be lifted."

At a press conference held Tuesday by the Congress of Religions some of its members expressed opinion that the government should not remove the ban on the LTTE until talks in Thailand showed steady progress

"Its' their personal opinion and not of the Congress of Religions," the statement further said.

To clear some media reports appeared on Wednesday regarding the press conference, the Congress of Religions issued this statement.

The Congress has reiterated its stand that the solution to the ethnic conflict should be found through peace talks, the statement said.

Venerable Professor Bellenwila Wimalaratne Nayake Thera, Venerable Maduluwewe Sobitha Thera, Bramma Sri Guhananda Sarma, Moulavi M.P Hipsoor Rahuman, Rev Dr. Mervyn Fernando and Fr.Ebanesar Joseph signed the statement.
