A leading People’s Alliance parliamentarian Monday openly said that the ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam should be lifted before the commencement of Thailand peace talks on September 16. " All peace efforts taken by the United National Front government will be ruined if the ban on the LTTE is not removed before the commencement of Thailand talks," said Mr.A.H.M.Fowzie, a senior minister in the then PA government and a leading member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.
"We must support the Prime Minister in his effort to bring lasting peace to the country. De-proscription of the LTTE is very important," Mr.Fowzie said.
fowzie_a_h_m_1-p.jpgThe President Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge has laid conditions to the UNF government that the ban on the LTTE should be removed only after the commencement of Thailand peace talks and if talks show satisfactory progress. She further said that the establishment of an interim administration should take place only after a full agreement is reached with the LTTE on the core issues of the conflict.
Commenting on President Chandrika Kumaratunge's conditions, Mr.Fowzie said, "this is her view. However, I differ from her view. The UNF has gone several miles forward in the peace process and has talked to LTTE several times. Any delay in removing the ban, would certainly ruin the peace process."
Mr Fowzie is one of the PA parliamentarian who is expected to support the UNF government in the proposed constitutional amendment clipping Presidential powers related to the dissolution of parliament, political sources said
Meanwhile, the National Bhikku Front (Jatika Sanga Sammelanaya- JSS) Monday evening held a protest meeting at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), in Colombo demanding the United National Front government not to lift the ban on LTTE and not to establish the proposed interim administration in the Northeast Province.
"We are not against peace. But we are against the division of the country. The ban on LTTE should not be removed. The government should abandon the idea of setting up an interim administration in the Northeast Province," said the Treasurer of the JSS Venerable Rajawatte Vappa Thera addressing the conference attended by several Buddhist monks .
Venerable Ellawella Methananda Thera said that,"Maha Sangha is not against peace and also not against Tamils. The Sangha is against the division of the country and the LTTE."
"It is the LTTE that demands a separate state in the island and not the Tamil people. The homeland concept of LTTE is a myth," stressed Ven Methananda Thera.
Ven.Varnagala Dharmaga Kusadame Thera said the Maha Sangha is against the setting up of interim administration in the Northeast.
